9 reasons you should have curd with every meal

9 reasons you should have curd with every meal

Who doesn’t love curd? Be it with a yummy, steaming paratha or as chaas, curd is often quite a staple in most Indian households. But did you know this versatile dish has a number of health benefits too? Yes, here’s how curd helps you stay healthy.

1.Helps improve digestion
The nutrients present in curd are easily absorbed by your digestive system. Not only that, it also helps in absorbing nutrients from other food items that you have eaten. It can also be used along with spicy food, as curd cools down and neutralises the heat that these foods create. A Taiwanese study even found that curd is helpful in curing H. Pylori infections which is known t cause peptic ulcers. You may also like to read about these home remedies for peptic ulcers.

2.Healthy for your heart

In a day and age where more and more young people are falling prey to heart disease, consuming curd can go a long way in maintaining a healthy heart. It minimizes the risk of high blood pressure and helps reduce cholesterol levels by preventing the thickening of carotid arteries.

3.Great for those who are lactose intolerant

Some people, who cannot consume milk because they are lactose intolerant, can safely consume curd. It converts the lactose present in milk to lactic acid, making it easier to digest. Also, you do not lose out on the nutritional boost that milk provides.

4.Helps boost immunity

Curd has ‘good bacteria’ present in it which strengthens your immune system by fighting against several micro organisms that are present in the body. It is also useful in preventing vaginal yeast infections in women. These properties of curd do not diminish even when it is heated along with curry preparations to add flavour.

5.Good for your teeth and bones

All dairy products are good for your bones, and curd is no different. Like milk, curd has a high amount of phosphorous and calcium. This makes it beneficial for your teeth and bones as it helps promote bone growth and makes your teeth stronger. Taking care of your bones is essential if you want to avoid painful diseases like osteoporosis and arthritis in the future.

6.Can be used as a skincare product

Nutrients like zinc, Vitamin E and phosphorus make curd a natural skincare product and it is often used as an ingredient in home-made packs. A simple mixture of curd, gram flour and lime juice can be made at home to give you an attractive and glowing face.

7.Helps get rid of dandruff

Many advertisements claim to have found the magical chemical formula for curing dandruff. But, curd can be a simple home made solution.  Why is it good to get rid of dandruff? It has lactic acid which has anti-fungal properties. What more? You don’t even have to add other ingredients to it. Just whip some curd in a bowl, and add it to your scalp. Leave it for an hour, and wash properly with water. You may also like to read about this home remedies for dandruff.

Foods and Beverages to Avoid with Stomach Ulcers:

Foods and Beverages to Avoid with Stomach Ulcers:

Coffee - Coffee stimulates acid production and can cause severe indigestion problems.
Alcohol - Alcohol can irritate and erode the lining of the stomach and small intestine, triggering the ulcers.
Spicy Foods - Certain peppers found in dishes, such as Mexican chili, can trigger heartburn in a flash. Avoid spicy foods as much as possible since they simulate acid reflux buildup and gastrointestinal pains.
What is Heartburn?

Heartburn occurs when the stomach acid backs up from the esophagus, and eventually reaches your throat area. Heartburn is a very unpleasant burning sensation that can truly leave a bad taste in your mouth. Nearly 1 out of every 5 Americans suffers from it.

What Causes Heartburn?

The common cause of heartburn is a lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, that doesn't contract regularly. Unhealthy foods play a major contributor of heartburn, especially foods that are deep fried or cooked in grease. Overeating can also cause acid reflux buildup due to the excess amount of pressure on the stomach.

What Are the Symptoms of Heartburn?

Symptoms of heartburn or acid reflux include a dry cough, a sore throat that causes difficulty swallowing, an increased burning sensation after digestion and tasting acid or food in the back of your mouth. These symptoms intensify the moment you lay down.

Foods and Beverages to Avoid with Acid Reflux:

Citrus Fruits - Citrus fruits might be ideal for the common cold, but the acidity inside can cause heartburn, particularly on an empty stomach.
Garlic and Onions - Although both vegetables are essential for a healthy dietary intake, they also wreck havoc on people suffering from heartburn.
Carbonated Beverages - Carbonated beverages cause gastric distension, leading to acid reflux and indigestion. It's best to stay away from sodas and just drink mineral water instead.
5 Natural Treatments for Heartburn

1) Eating a Healthy Diet - There are many foods that are extremely good for you, but bad for your heartburn. Some of these foods include; ground beef, sour cream, cottage cheese, onions, tomatoes, and citrus fruits. Make sure you avoid fried and greasy foods to prevent heartburn from occurring. Drink plenty of water in between meals and skip the carbonated beverages altogether.

2) Enzymes and Probiotics - Probiotics are often referred to as the “good bacteria”, since they promote healthy digestion. Probiotics minimize the growth of harmful bacteria and boost the immune system. Probiotics are available in supplement form, and help combat acid reflux. It's recommended to take a hydrochloric acid or HCI enzyme supplement along with probiotics for smooth digestion.

3) Aloe Vera Juice - Aloe vera juice has been known to treat acid reflux and other medical symptoms. It's advisable to drink 1/4 cup of aloe vera approximately 20 minutes before a meal or whenever you experience acid reflux issues. You can even mix the aloe vera with tea or water if you don't like the basic taste of it. Do not drink aloe vera juice if you have diabetes, kidney failure or thyroid disease. Pregnant women and children should also avoid it.

4) Apple Cider Vinegar  - Apple cider vinegar is used to treat stomach acid buildup, as ironic as it sounds. The cider helps digestion by breaking down fats, despite the acidity factors. It is recommended to mix one or two teaspoons of the apple cider vinegar with a glass of water. Drink a glass of the cider before meals or when you feel a reflux attack coming on.

5) Baking Soda - A little baking soda is all it takes to reduce your acid reflux problems. You may not appreciate the bland taste, but you'll feel much better afterward. Mix a half or a full teaspoon of baking soda with a glass of water.

Natural Treatments for Stomach Ulcers

1) Cabbage Juice - Cabbage is packed with an abundance of natural anti-oxidant properties that help prevent stomach ulcers. Cabbage contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C, E, K and folate, all essential for treating acid reflux and fighting cancer.

2) Zinc Carnosine - Zinc-Carnosine is used to treat stomach ulcers and other gastrointestinal problems. The function of the Zinc-Carnosine is to repair damaged tissues and heal ulcer wounds.

Recommended Dosage: Use for 8 weeks, with a daily dose of 75mg in divided doses.

3) Probiotics - Probiotics improve intestinal functions and help fend off Helicobacter pylori. They are also used to prevent other gastric disorders, such as diarrhea and inflammatory bowel disease, from occurring.

Recommended Dosage: Take a probiotic of 1 to 2 million CFUs daily.

4) Glutamine - Glutamine significantly reduces the amount of inflammation brought on by a Helicobacter pylori infection. Glutamine supplements can be purchased at any local health store.

Recommended Dosage: Take 2 grams of glutamine daily for stomach ulcers.

5) Ginger Root - Ginger limits the harmful helicobacter pylori from acting up. Add several slices of fresh ginger roots to hot water, and drink the ginger mixture approximately 20 minutes or so before each meal for a quick soothing remedy.

6) Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice Powder (DGL) - DGL can work wonders for peptic ulcers. They protect the inner lining of your small intestine and stomach.

Recommended Dosage: Suggested dose is 200 to 400 mg daily dissolved in 200 ml warm water.

7) Astaxanthin - These powerful antioxidants help protect the gastrointestinal or GI tract and reduce symptoms of acid reflux. The free radical scavenging activity of astaxanthin also combats against Helicobacter pylori bacterial infection.

Recommended Dosage: Suggested daily dose is 40 mg.

6 Symptoms That Can’t Be Ignored

6 Symptoms That Can’t Be Ignored

Feeling aches and pains is part of being human. Everyone gets them from time to time. A lot of the time, they aren't serious and you can get away with taking a pill or having a rest. However, sometimes you need to listen to your body because the pain is telling you something is wrong. More severe symptoms indicate a more serious problem. Here are 6 pains or symptoms you should never ignore.

1. Weakness in your arms and legs

If you are feeling weak or numb in your arms, legs or even face, this can be a sign of a stroke. A telling sign is if it’s on one side of your body. Other indicators of a stroke are dizziness, unbalance and having trouble walking.

Get help as soon as possible if you suddenly can’t see clearly, have a strong headache, feel confused or have trouble speaking. Call an ambulance. If you’re able to receive a clot-busting drug within 4.5 hours of your first symptom, the risk for long-term disability is considerably lower. A stroke that is caught early is often reversible.

2. Chest pain

There are a number of reasons you might be experiencing chest pain, but it’s best not to try tough it out because it can be a sign of something serious. If you feel heavy or tight in the chest, the pain lasts for more than a few minutes or returns you need to get help.

This could be caused by heart disease or a heart attack, especially if it happens after you’ve been active. You should definitely get professional medical attention if it’s accompanied by sweating, pressure, shortness of breath or nausea.

3. Blood in your urine

Blood in the urine is a sign of several medical issues and shouldn’t be ignored. If blood in the urine is coupled with pain in the back or side, you may have kidney stones. This is when small crystals form in the kidney and move through the tube that carries your urine. A doctor can detect if you have this from an x-ray or ultrasound. Although it is painful, kidney stones will eventually pass through your bladder or a doctor can remove them.

If blood in the urine is accompanied by the increased feeling that you need to urinate, frequent trips to the toilet, or a burning feeling when you pee you may have a severe bladder or kidney infection. You need to see a doctor right away, especially if you have a fever.

Lastly, if you see blood in the urine but don’t have any other symptoms this may be a sign of kidney or bladder cancer and you should still consult your doctor.

4. Pain in the back of your lower leg

This is often the main symptom of a blood clot, known as deep vein thrombosis. This happens when you’ve been sitting still for long periods, after bed rest or a long plane ride. Blood clots also might cause pain and swelling when you walk or stand. Blood clots can break or block blood flow so it’s important to catch it before it causes complications. While it’s normal to feel some tenderness after exercising, if you feel heat or see redness around the swollen or painful areas, it’s time to call your doctor or visit the ER.

5. Suicidal Thoughts

If you are feel hopeless and as if you have no reason to live you need to talk to someone and get help. Be in touch with a mental health professional who can help you through the crisis and keep you safe. You can also call Lifeline, a suicide prevention helpline. This phone service is available worldwide, 24/7. They are free to call and it’s a confidential service designed to make you feel safe sharing your thoughts.

6. Wheezing

If you experience difficulties breathing or you hear a whistle sound when you breathe this is something that needs to be treated immediately. A doctor can determine whether this is asthma, lung disease, a severe allergy or a result of exposure to chemicals, and come up with a treatment plan. If the wheezing is due to asthma, you should consult with an allergist, to find a plan to reduce future flare-ups.

Wheezing can also indicate pneumonia or bronchitis. The other symptoms you might have are coughed up yellow or green mucus, shortness of breath and fever.

BLOOD DONATION - SOME FACTS

BLOOD DONATION - SOME FACTS

Some Facts on Blood Donation
An adult has about 5 litres of blood in the body.
Typically, about 300 ml (anywhere between 200 and 450 ml) of blood is taken by a blood bank (depending on requirement) from a person.
The blood donated is recouped by the body within 2 to 7 days.
One unit of blood(about 450 ml) helps save 3 lives.
This is because, the blood taken from a donor is separated into its components (Red cells, White cells, Plasma and Platelets), each of which can be transfused into the blood of a recipient, separately.
It takes approximately 10 minutes to remove one unit of blood from the donor . Including the time taken for filling up a form prior to donation, a physical examination (BP and weight) of the donor and the time to relax after donating blood, the whole process can be completed in about 45 minutes to an hour.
The blood removed from the donor is tested for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, Syphilis, Malaria parasite and blood group. In other words, persons affected with diabetes and taking medicines to keep diabetes under control can also donate blood.
Whenever you donate blood, you will be removing excess cholesterol accumulated in the blood, thus reducing the chance of heart attack.
Take some biscuits / cake and coffee / tea / fruit juice, after donating blood and sit (lie down if you feel giddy) for about 5 to 10 minutes.
The donor can resume regular activities after about 30 minutes of donating blood. Avoid the following:
Climbing stairs within 30 minutes
Smoking
Every year, our nation requires about 4 crore units of blood while availability is 40 Lac units (estimates differ - another info states that requirement is 90 Lac units and availability is 40 Lac units; all the same, there is a definite shortage of blood in the country for saving lives)Donating blood is a safe process - a fresh needle is used for each person and there is no fear of contracting any disease. The no 1 reason given by donors to donate blood is "I want to help others". The two major reasons for a person not donating blood is "Never thought about it" and "I don't like needles" Persons from the age of 18 to the age of 60 can donate blood, except when they are affected with HIV +ve, cancer, Hepatitis B or C (within the previous 3 years), seizures, syphilis, and women during their menstruating cycle.

Symptoms of chemical withdrawal have peaked in intensity, including restlessness. The number of cue induced crave episodes will peak for the "average" ex-user. Lung bronchial tubes leading to air sacs (alveoli) are beginning to relax in recovering smokers. Breathing is becoming easier and the lungs functional abilities are starting to increase.

# 5 - 8 days - The "average" ex-smoker will encounter an "average" of three cue induced crave episodes per day. Although we may not be "average" and although serious cessation time distortion can make minutes feel like hours, it is unlikely that any single episode will last longer than 3 minutes. Keep a clock handy and time them.

# 10 days - The "average ex-user is down to encountering less than two crave episodes per day, each less than 3 minutes.

This treatment method has no side effects, however at the commencement of treatment you may have to urinate a few times. It is better if we continue this and make this procedure as a routine work in our life. Drink Water and Stay healthy and Active.

This makes sense .The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals, not cold water. Maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating!!! Nothing to lose, everything to gain.

For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you.

It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion.

Once this "sludge" reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks:
1. Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting.
2. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.
3. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack.
4. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.
5. 60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up.

6. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep.

Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is perhaps the single most underrated nutrient in the world of nutrition. That's probably because it's free: your body makes it when sunlight touches your skin.

Fifteen facts that are important to know about vitamin D and sunlight exposure:

1. Vitamin D is produced by your skin in response to exposure to ultraviolet radiation from natural sunlight.

2. The healing rays of natural sunlight (that generate vitamin D in your skin) cannot penetrate glass. So you don't generate vitamin D when sitting in your car or home.

3. It is nearly impossible to get adequate amounts of vitamin D from your diet. Sunlight exposure is the only reliable way to generate vitamin D in your own body.

4. A person would have to drink ten tall glasses of vitamin D fortified milk each day just to get minimum levels of vitamin D into their diet.

5. The further you live from the equator, the longer exposure you need to the sun in order to generate vitamin D. Canada, the UK and most U.S. States are far from the equator.

6. People with dark skin pigmentation may need 20 - 30 times as much exposure to sunlight as fair-skinned people to generate the sam e amount of vitamin D. That's why prostate cancer is epidemic among black men - it's a simple, but widespread, sunlight deficiency.

7. Sufficient levels of vitamin D are crucial for calcium absorption in your intestines. Without sufficient vitamin D, your body cannot absorb calcium, rendering calcium supplements useless.

8. Chronic vitamin D deficiency cannot be reversed overnight: it takes months of vitamin D supplementation and sunlight exposure to rebuild the body's bones and nervous system.

9. Even weak sunscreens (SPF=8) block your body's ability to generate vitamin D by 95%. This is how sunscreen products actually cause disease -by creating a critical vitamin deficiency in the body.

10. It is impossible to generate too much vitamin D in your body from sunlight exposure: your body will self-regulate and only generate what it needs.

11. If it hurts to press firmly on your sternum, you may be suffering from chronic vitamin D deficiency right now.

12. Vitamin D is "activated" in your body by your kidneys and liver before it can be used.

13. Having kidney disease or liver damage can greatly impair your body's ability to activate circulating vitamin D.

14. The sunscreen industry doesn't want you to know that your body actually needs sunlight exposure because that realization would mean lower sales of sunscreen products.

15. Even though vitamin D is one of the most powerful healing chemicals in your body, your body makes it absolutely free. No prescription required.

On the issue of sunlight exposure, by the way, it turns out that super antioxidants greatly boost your body's ability to handle sunlight without burning. Astaxanthin is one of the most powerful "internal sunscreens" and can allow you to stay under the sun twice as long without burning.

OBESITY

What are the risks of obesity?

Obesity is a serious condition as it increases the risk of heart diseases, diabetes, joint pains, high blood pressure and some types of cancers such as colon, breast and uterine cancers. Obese people are also more prone to diseases and problems such as stroke, gall bladder disease, breathing problems (sleep apnoea syndrome), low back pain, swelling of the feet and ankles, imbalances and accidents. Obese people have a low self-esteem and they avoid company, which makes them insular and insecure.

AnchorHow is it diagnosed?

Obesity is determined by measuring body weight and fat. There are different ways of calculating body fat. Body mass index (BMI) is one of the best methods used to measure body fat. BMI is calculated as the ratio of the weight in Kg and height in square metre. Guidelines define overweight as a BMI between 25 and 29.9 kg/square meter and obesity as a BMI greater than 30. The doctor may also suggest blood test for sugar, cholesterol, and triglycerides. In case insufficient thyroid functioning (hypothyroidism) is suspected, the doctor will ask for a thyroid stimulating hormone test.

What is the treatment?

The simplest and the most basic principle is to reduce food intake,
especially the fat content, and increasing physical activity.
Increasing physical activity alone is not an easy way to lose weight
unless one combines it with a reduction of fat intake. Physical
activity includes walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, aerobics or any other household activity such as cleaning, washing, climbing stairs etc. The sense of well-being and weight loss motivates an individual to make changes in his or her diet as well. The best way of keeping a good control on ones dietary intake is to keep a daily diary, and writing down whatever one eats as one eats. Avoid high oil content in the curries and do not use butter on chappatis, which may be tasty without the fat. The doctor or health care provider evaluates the daily diet and plans a diet providing calories enough to maintain the weight below the ideal body weight.

Increase your physical; activity and reduce the intake of food. Your initial goal of weight loss therapy should be to reduce the bodyweight by 10% from baseline. With success, further weight loss can be attempted.Weight loss should be 1-2 kg for 6 months. Reducing dietary fat alone without reducing calories is not sufficient for weight loss. Reducing dietary fat along with dietary carbohydrates can help reduce calories.Weight maintenance program should be priory after 6 months.

In order to maintain one's weight, calories consumed should be equal to calories used. Energy balance is like a scale. When calories consumed are more than calories used, it results in weight gain. Let physical activity tip the scale in your favour. You can perform aerobic exercises 30 minutes a day thrice week. Avoid a sedentary lifestyle.

Certain medicines are also available for weight reduction. There are two main types of weight reducing drugs: one class decreases appetite while the other prevents dietary fat from being absorbed by the body. These drugs should be taken only with doctor”s advice, as there are a lot of side effects related with their use. Surgery to cure obesity should be undertaken as the last resort for people who are very obese, have tried all the other options available and have medical problems. The main surgical option is to have your stomach banded or stapled so that it cannot accommodate more food. Why not eat less voluntarily?

Few tips to bring about weight loss as well as ensuring good health:

Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, and grain products like wheat.
Increase the consumption of complex carbohydrates like whole wheat, millet (jowar) and barley (bajra)
Restrict refined products such as flour (maida) and its products such as bread, noodles, macaronis and pastas in regular diet
Restrict fat and cholesterol rich foods. Only non-vegetarian foods (like eggs and dairy products) are good sources of cholesterol, however saturated fatty acids present in butter, ghee, vanaspati and coconut get metabolised to cholesterol in our body
Reduce the amount of sugars consumed
Consume raw fruits and vegetables in form of salads and raitas in every meal. These provide adequate vitamins, minerals and fibre. Fibre is essential as it aids in digestion, has an effective role in managing obesity and cardiovascular problems
 Limit salt intake
Have small portions of food at a time
 Do not skip meals
 Have regular meal timings
Do not eat while cooking and watching television
Drink plenty of water (6-8 glasses) in a day
Exercise regularly. Do brisk walking at least for 20-40 minutes in a day
The best exercises that are sustainable and safe to loose weight are
aerobic exercises. Aerobic exercises usually involve vigorous exercises sustained over a period of several minutes and their effect is to increase the efficiency of the lungs, heart and blood circulation, which are collectively known as the aerobic system. Short and sharp bursts of activity which rely on the body”s reserves of oxygen do not produce a similar improvement. Exercises should increase strength and mobility and also aid relaxation. You can choose walking, swimming, bicycling as per your fitness level and increase gradually. You should plan on 20-minute sessions at least 3 times per week. Gradual changes in eating habits will help encourage a permanent lifestyle change. A slow weight loss of 1 or 2 pounds a week, until the desirable body weight is reached, is best.

HOME REMEDIES
